Caissons floated out in Durban
In the South African port of Durban, Interbeton has sunk the first caissons in place that will form a 1,200 metre quay wall. Our international group company is carrying out the project in joint venture with the local construction firms Grinaker-LTA and BCW.
The Port of Durban is one of the largest on the African continent. The National Ports Authority has developed an expansion plan to meet the need for additional berthing and cargo-handling facilities. The first part of the plan involves building a new quay able to accept ships with draughts of up to 15 metres.The new quay is being built 200 metres in front of an existing one. The area in between will be reclaimed by filling with three million cubic metres of sand to create extra storage capacity. The project, which is worth 33 million euros, will be handed over in the middle of this year.
