Stronger together for a safe and future-proof Westerschelde Tunnel

After months of intensive preparation, BAM Infra Nederland and Westerscheldetunnel Maintenance successfully completed the works on the Westerschelde Tunnel and the N62 over the past two weekends. Thanks to close collaboration with client N.V. Westerscheldetunnel and a tightly coordinated schedule, the asphalt surrounding the tunnel was renewed, the installations were thoroughly inspected, and the tunnel’s safety was further optimised. The Westerschelde Tunnel and the N62 form a vital link in the accessibility of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Thousands of road users rely on this connection every day. To ensure continued reliability, scheduled maintenance was carried out in April and May on the asphalt and tunnel installations, as these had reached the end of their service life.

Sustainably renewed asphalt: 8,900 tonnes of LEAB

One of the highlights of the project was the replacement of no less than 43,760 m² of asphalt over a stretch of more than two kilometres in both directions. Both the binder course and surface course were renewed using LEAB (Low Energy Asphalt Concrete), a sustainable asphalt mixture produced at lower temperatures. This significantly reduces energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Additionally, the binder course contains 70% recycled material – a fine example of circularity in infrastructure.
