The wide application of smart grids enables us to create a cheaper, more sustainable power grid. A smart grid is a power grid that matches the supply and demand of different energy sources to each other. So, for example, if a house has an energy surplus, the leftover energy can be passed on to other homes in the neighbourhood.

District heating systems are also a practical option: housing, work spaces and living spaces are then heated using heat from the surrounding area. Open district heating systems allow more than one supplier to provide heat, and customers can also be suppliers too.
