German tunnelling specialist Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau has been awarded an € 83 million contract for the construction of a 5.4 km long tunnel.
The tunnel is part of the SMART project in Kuala Lumpur, capital city of Malaysia. SMART stands for ‘Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel’, a drainage tunnel of 11.83 m internal diameter.
The tunnel is designed to relieve flooding in central Kuala Lumpur, which occurs on an unacceptably high frequency. Part of the tunnel is dual purpose and going to be utilised during non flood conditions as a highway tunnel carrying two lanes of traffic in each direction on vertically separated road decks. The tunnel will be constructed with a Mixshield TBM of 13.21 m diameter and will be the largest bored tunnel ever built in South East Asia. Tunnel boring works will commence in May 2004 and will be completed in June 2006. The tunnel boring machine is currently being manufactured in Germany.
Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau continues with this project a long tradition in specialist projects in South East Asia. During 1992 to 1996, the 421 m high Telecommunications Tower ‘Menara Kuala Lumpur’, one of the capital’s land marks, was designed and built by Wayss & Freytag.
Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau is an operating company of Royal BAM Group, a Dutch-based construction company which ranks among the top ten construction companies in Europe.
