Bangladesh-UK 'Friendship Bridge'
A £70 million bridge project backed by the Export Credits Guarantee Department (ECGD) is giving an economic boost to north-eastern Bangladesh by easing a major transport bottleneck. Civil engineering company Edmund Nuttall Ltd, based in Camberley, Surrey, designed and built the 1.2 kilometre-long concrete bridge across the river Meghna between Bhairab and Ashuganj.
The project took 33 months to complete and now offers a speedy river crossing to commercial traffic that had been forced to rely on overstretched ferry services.
The bridge has now been renamed the Bangladesh-UK Friendship Bridge to mark the British contribution to the project. Furthermore, Edmund Nuttall has been named Construction Firm of the Year in the British International Expertise Awards for its work in the project.
