The new underground highway is an innovative installation method, where new electricity cables are no longer laid in the pavement as standard, but beneath the road. This offers significant advantages for installing energy cables. It makes it easier to avoid obstacles that typically cause delays when laying electricity cables, such as tree roots, lamp posts and existing cables and pipes. As a result, installation speed increases and excavation damage is greatly reduced. This prevents delays and makes the process more cost-efficient. In short, the new underground highway contributes to a faster, safer and more sustainable energy transition.
With this approach, the parties expect to at least double the installation speed, reducing inconvenience for local residents and enabling them to rely more quickly on a well-functioning electricity network.
The strength of this approach lies in collaboration, says Rolf te Velde, Managing Director of BAM Energie en Water: ‘At BAM Energie en Water, we want to move forward – improving every day. But without collaboration, you cannot progress. Here in Zuidwolde, we worked closely with Enexis and the Municipality of De Wolden to achieve tangible results. Thinking in terms of possibilities and simply getting on with it is the strength of our partnership. I am very grateful to them for that.’
