Start of construction of Meerstad lock bridge in the Netherlands

On behalf of Bureau Meerstad, we are constructing a new movable lock bridge between Tersluis and De Zeilen in Meerstad, Groningen. Since late 2024, we have been working together in a construction team to develop the final design and optimise sustainable choices. On 4 November, we signed the realisation agreement. Construction will start in December 2025 and is expected to take around fifteen months. The bridge will provide a safe, energy-efficient connection for cars, cyclists and pedestrians, enhancing accessibility to this rapidly growing neighbourhood.

Over the next fifteen months, we will build a modern, movable bascule bridge with a clearance height of 1.5 metres. This height allows smaller boats to pass underneath, reducing the number of bridge openings and saving energy.

Sustainable and Digital Construction

In this project, we are deliberately focusing on innovative and sustainable solutions, which we developed during the construction team phase. Wherever possible, we use sustainable materials such as GroenR concrete. This more environmentally friendly concrete mix emits less CO₂ and consumes less energy during production, making it greener than traditional concrete.

In addition, we use smart digital tools such as 3D models and drones to visualise the design and organise the construction efficiently. This approach helps us reduce emissions while ensuring safe and rapid delivery.
