After many years of intensive use, the lock complexes Grevelingensluis, Roompotsluis and Bergse Diepsluis in the Netherlands are due for major renovation. Rijkswaterstaat has awarded the contract to the consortium STROOOM, comprising BAM Infra Nederland, Equans and Demako. Today, the partnership was officially confirmed with the signing of the agreement by all parties. Construction work on the Grevelingensluis will commence in 2027, with the other two locks to follow thereafter.
Various components of the locks require maintenance. The works will include new systems for operation, control and monitoring, replacement of lock gate drives, modifications in line with the Machinery Directive, and the renewal of several mechanical and civil engineering structures.
The project will begin with the Grevelingensluis, which forms part of the Delta Works and is located in the Grevelingendam between the Eastern Scheldt and Lake Grevelingen. It is the only access point to Lake Grevelingen for shipping and comprises three bridges: the Grevelingen Bridge (N59), the bridge on the parallel road (bypass), and Den Ysere Ryve, which serves road traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians.
Henk Post, Executive Director of BAM Infra Nederland, on behalf of STROOOM:
‘We are very pleased with this first portfolio award for the renovation of four locks. The scale of the task calls for smart collaboration and optimal use of each partner’s expertise. Together with Rijkswaterstaat, we are starting the future-proofing of the Grevelingensluis, with a clear focus on sustainability, traceability and broad applicability across the lock portfolio.’
This maintenance work is part of Rijkswaterstaat’s broader renovation programme. Many roads, bridges, viaducts and locks in the Netherlands were built decades ago and are now subject to increasingly intensive use. By maintaining and strengthening them today, we ensure that everyone can continue to travel safely, smoothly and reliably in the future.
