South West’s BAM scoops two awards at annual South West property ceremony
Hemel Hempstead, 1 June 2016 - South West contractor BAM Construction has scooped two major awards in the Michelmores South West Property Awards. The project teams celebrated after Chy Trevail, Cornwall Council’s offices at Bodmin, won Building of the Year, and South Devon UTC won Project of the Year over £7 million.
Nick Goff, Regional Director, said: ‘The Michelmore awards are very prestigious in the South West. The quality of the entries is very high so we take great pride in our achievement which we put down to knowing the people and areas where we build and how to collaborate effectively to create quality schemes.’
Chy Trevail was managed by BAM’s David Hawkins, and designed by PBWC. Judges said: ‘Working to a demanding design brief, BAM Construct and Cornwall Council worked together to provide modern, fit for purpose office space for 600 relocated Cornwall Council employees. The building also offers a café, a civil wedding venue and a flexible meeting suite. BAM worked extensively with the local supply chain and community to create an impressive building – the first step in rejuvenating the Beacon Park development where it is situated.’
Chy Trevail pipped Plymouth Genesis building, Plymouth School of Creative Arts and the Science Park Centre in Exeter.
South Devon University Technical College in Newton Abbot was managed by Andy Witnall the architect was Stride Treglown. Judges said: ‘South Devon University Technical College is a purpose built facility that brings 'employer driven' vocational education to 600 14-18 year olds in Newton Abbot and beyond. With a floor area of 4,700 m² the building features large workshops with views in from the street, specialist studios, ICT spaces and science labs with terraces to offer the opportunity for outdoor teaching and large scale experiments.’
The project beat rival entries from Plymouth School of Creative Arts, and EDF Energy Training Centre in Cannington, Somerset.
BAM’s current portfolio of projects in Devon and Cornwall includes a suite of schools for Devon County Council, Plymouth Science Park, the Tate Gallery St Ives, and Exeter University’s Living Systems Institute. The firm has had dedicated offices in Bristol for 50 years.
