Flatiron subsidiary FCI wins Associated Builders and Contractors Excellence Award

Longmont, CO, February 7, 2005 - Acting as builder for this project, Flatiron's southern California subsidiary FCI Constructors won ABC's Excellence Award (top honors) for the new El Rancho missile transport bridge at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara, California.

The structure is a 2,000-foot-long bridge designed for extremely heavy missile transport loads through environmentally sensitive wetlands. Lead by Straub Construction, the project team overcame numerous environmental and archaeological challenges and utilized the utmost sensitivity while working in the wetlands.

Due to the necessary high-level of cooperation with on-site environmentalists and archaeologists, military officials estimated the project would last just under two years. However, the project team accelerated the schedule and successfully completed the bridge in 424 days.

Contracting Officer Jim Mills of the Army Corps of Engineers wrote, "This is the first time I've seen a project of this magnitude that had the full commitment of the major contractor and his team go to such lengths to protect the habitat, and at the same time make absolutely sure that they met or exceeded every design spec and deadline - no matter what obstacles."

FCI Chief Estimator Jim Keep, William Jensen, and representatives from Straub Construction accepted the award during a ceremony on January 25 at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.

This win qualifies the project for the prestigious National ABC Eagle Award competition on February 21, 2005.
