Flatiron secures major public-private venture in western Canada
(Longmont, CO) November 4, 2005 – Flatiron secured a new $110 million design-build project to upgrade a four-mile portion of the scenic Trans-Canada Highway through Kicking Horse Canyon between Golden and the Yoho National Park’s western border in British Columbia.
Bilfinger Berger BOT, chosen by the Province of British Columbia to develop the project, selected the Trans Park Highway Constructors — a joint venture managed by Flatiron Constructors Canada Limited — to design and construct a new bridge (reaching nearly 300 feet tall) and perform other significant roadway improvements along Trans Canada Highway 1.
According to the Province, “Revitalizing this portion of the national highway system is critical to strengthening the province as Canada’s gateway to the world.”
The portion of the highway slated for reconstruction is a two-lane roadway that winds through mountainous terrain with steep rock faces on one side and Kicking Horse Canyon on the other. Flatiron will reduce sharp curves and increase capacity from two to four lanes, making the road safer for the 9,000 vehicles per day it currently carries. The project will be completed in approximately 2.5 years.
