The Brussels Metro is being extended and CEI Construct has a slice of the action. The Belgian subsidiary of HBG Civiel has regularly been involved in metro projects in the Belgian capital in the past, and has built up an excellent track record.
On the boundary between the districts of Anderlecht and Molenbeek, work is progressing apace on the extension of Line 2 of the Brussels Metro Network. This metro line is ultimately set to grow into a circle line. CEI Construct was awarded the contract for one of the subprojects: the construction work on the Delacroix Metro Station together with adjacent small structures.
The site is only five hundred metres long but nevertheless contains a variety of works. CEI is beginning with a tunnel section connecting to an existing section of the line. Then runs above ground to cross a canal before diving down thirteen metres below the surface again. That is necessary because, in the next part of the project, the two tracks have to cross each other below ground. The entire project – with a contract value of €12 million – is due for completion at the end of next year. Then it will be the turn of the installation contractors and the rail contractors. Trains will not run on the line until 2006.
