HBG Construction awarded £22m Asda stores contracts at Eastlands and Livingston

HBG Construction Ltd is to build a new supercentre for Asda Stores Ltd at the Asda Sportscity development in Eastlands, Manchester.

Located adjacent to the new Commonwealth Games Stadium, the project construction works will commence in October with completion targeted for the end of May 2002. HBG Construction has also been awarded Phase 2 of the Asda supercentre at Livingston, Scotland.

The £14.5 million contract for the construction of the new store is part of a £40 million investment by Asda at Eastlands. The new supercentre will have 130,000 sq.ft [12,077 sq.m] of potential sales area with office space on a second floor.  As with all new Asda stores, the construction features a structural steel frame and terrazzo flooring and HBG will undertake the complete installation of mechanical, electrical, refrigeration and sprinkler services. The project also includes the provision of a petrol filling station, service yard and parking for 970 cars, including 71 spaces for special needs.

Architect for the store is the Mason Richards Partnership and quantity surveyor McLeod & Aitken.

At the same time, HBG Construction has been awarded the £7.5 million Phase 2 contract for the Asda Wal-Mart development at the Almondvale Shopping Centre in Livingston having just completed the similarly valued Phase 1. These contracts are part of a series of projects that HBG Construction is undertaking for Asda, involving newbuilds, extensions and refurbishments throughout the UK, including current works at Portsmouth, Swindon, Pudsey, Derby and Dewsbury.
