Flood defence dam ready for action

The flood defence dam at Melton Mowbray is ready for action and due to be handed over by Nuttall to the client, the Environment Agency. This 7.6 million-euro scheme will protect the town of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire from flooding from the River Eye.

The floods caused €21.4 million worth of damage in 1999 with large sections of the town centre under water. The project involved the construction of a 550-metre long clay dam, with a concrete control structure as well as the stabilisation of some 2,200 metres of railway embankment. Work started in August 2001.
