Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust appoints BAM to deliver £20 million new wing and access

Hemel Hempstead, 27 March 2015 - BAM Construction has been appointed by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a new three storey ward block development including a new accessible link to Smith Lane, a new Critical Care Unit, car parking and roadways for the hospital. BAM’s appointment to the £20 million plus Bowman Riley designed scheme follows a single stage tender with tough competition from other contractors.

The three storeys will include new paediatric and elderly patient wards and retail and refreshments provision, and improved access arrangements around the hospital. Special attention is being paid to dust and noise control because of the central location of the build to existing live facilities. Other aspects of the scheme include service diversions and some challenging ground works.

Paul Cleminson, BAM’s Project Director, said: ‘The critical factor for any construction scheme is the ability to work collaboratively. In a live hospital environment, this is so important. Our engagement with the client will be enhanced by our market leading use of BIM technology. Our record of delivering schemes locally in Bradford and Yorkshire is well known. BAM is already very engaged with changing the landscape, such as at Bradford College. But this is reinforced by our UK wide healthcare experience. This adds real value to a technically challenging project like this. Our experience of complex health schemes for the NHS includes delivering multiple projects during a long term relationship at Sheffield. BAM is also currently engaged delivering healthcare facilities in Liverpool, London, Scotland, Wales, and Somerset. We’ve got a strong local supply chain and already this means the mechanical and electrical modules for the project will be made in Bradford. Local employment initiatives will provide apprentice opportunities allowing the scheme to provide career and learning opportunities for local people.’

Paul Featherstone, the Trust’s Director of Estates and Facilities, said: ‘Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing top quality health care for the people of Bradford. An important supporting aspect of this is the provision of modern, best in class facilities that actively support the delivery of excellent clinical services. The Trust is delighted to appoint BAM Construction Limited as its construction partner. This will be a true landmark building for the Trust, and we are looking forward to working with BAM and drawing on their considerable NHS and wider construction experience. The Trust is confident that through BAM’s attention to detail, meticulous planning and programming, and robust cost control that successful delivery of the project will be achieved.’

BAM expects to commence on site in Spring and the project concludes in Autumn 2016. The company has appointed Matthew Garnett as its Project Manager, whose experience includes Wharfedale Hospital and the complex remodelling of the live University of Hull Brynmor Jones library.

BAM’s healthcare portfolio includes a new clinical wing for Great Ormond Street Hospital, mental health facilities in Shrewsbury, children’s wards for Chelsea and Westminster and Jubilee Hospital in Taunton, as well as a series of major hospital developments for Welsh Heath Estates in Caerphilly, Ebbw Vale and Swansea. The company also provides FM managed facilities for two hospitals, including Wharfedale in Leeds.
