Kill, Co. Kildare, 26 January 2023 – Earlier this week, BAM’s team on the Athy Distributor Road Project successfully installed two, 230-ton braced pair steel girders spanning 80 meters over the River Barrow.
This major milestone is the culmination of many months of planning and hard work by the BAM project team, BAM’s supply chain partners, Roughan O’Donovan, Waterways Ireland and Kildare County Council.
With such a heavy and complex lift comes several engineering challenges. Over the past number of months, BAM has carried out a number of geotechnical and structural temporary works designs and independent design checks.
The fabrication and assembly of the beams were carried out by MACK Engineering and Jamestown Profiling. TerraTech Consulting, AGL, MWP Consulting Engineers, Charlotte Murphy Consulting Engineers, McKenna Consulting Engineers, GOB Crane Hire, Saetech Engineering, and PHL all played an important part in getting the project to this point.
Works on the bridge will be ongoing over the coming months as the precast deck panels are installed and the remaining elements are completed.
Following the commencement of works in late 2021, the Athy Distributor Road Project has been progressing well over the past year, works will continue to complete the remaining elements of the scheme ahead of the planned completion date in 2024.
