BMB supports super sewer clean up

The Clean Up Crew

Camberley, 9 November 2015 - Braving downpours and muddy conditions, team members from the BMB JV (BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty) joined local residents, their colleagues from Tideway and volunteers from the charity Thames21 to literally get stuck in with a clean-up operation on the banks of the River Thames at Chiswick Eyot in West London last Friday (30 October). The event was organised by Thames21 which is running a citizen science project to improve understanding of what litter is in the River Thames and where it comes from.

AJ McConville from Thames21 said: ‘It was an excellent turnout despite the weather, and it was wonderful to see how much cleaner Chiswick Eyot looked after. Huge thanks are in order for the local residents, BMB and Tideway staff who took the time to help.’

The BMB JV will deliver the six kilometre west section of the new 25 kilometre Thames Tideway Tunnel ‘super sewer’ which will run from Acton in West London to Wandsworth in South West London and incorporating seven separate work sites along the route.

Local resident and keen rower, Gemma Mann, said: ‘Being able to do my bit to help is really rewarding. It will be great to row down here and see the island looking much cleaner. When you’re on the river you see all sorts of things floating past - especially when it’s raining and sewage is pouring into the river, it can be really disgusting. The Thames Tideway Tunnel can’t come soon enough for me.’

Main construction works are due to commence next year and upon completion the new tunnel will ensure the capital’s sewerage system is fit to support its population for at least the next 100 years.
