Musgrove’s new Jubilee building is completed

(Press release Musgrove Park Hospital:) Taunton, Somerset, 21 February 2014 - The keys to Musgrove Park Hospital’s new 112-bedroom Jubilee building have been handed over by construction firm BAM.

The handover (which took place on Thursday, 20th February 2014) signals the completion of the construction of the building by BAM and means that the hospital can now begin its final fit out ready for patients to start using the state-of-the-art facility at the end of March 2014.

Following the handover, Chairman, Rosalinde Wyke, said: ‘Receiving the keys to the new Jubilee Building marks the culmination of many years of hard work and planning by staff right across the hospital, it is a very proud moment. I am absolutely thrilled with this fantastic new building. We’ve worked with patient representatives and staff to make sure it provides the best possible environment to care for our patients and it’s wonderful that we are now in a position to add the final touches to this facility in readiness to open to patients in March. Some of our wards in the Old Building were built back in the 1940s for war time care. They have long been unsuitable for modern day healthcare so it is wonderful that our patients will soon be able to benefit from the vast improvement the Jubilee building provides. Our thanks go to the League of Friends for donating £547,000 to provide all the building’s equipment and also to BAM for their hard work in ensuring the project remained on track and was completed with minimal delay.’

Nigel Harris, BAM project manager, said: ‘This handover is a major milestone in the course of this project, which BAM, the client and the design team have been working hard on over the last couple of years to complete. The success of this project, which is the largest to date procured under the Construction Framework South West (CFSW) is a testament to the collaborative working relationship that permeates through the entire project team. The new facility will give a major boost to patient care at Musgrove Park.’

The Jubilee building is a three-storey building containing three wards and 112 en-suite bedrooms. It will replace four open plan ‘Nightingale’ wards in the Old Building.

The wards have been designed to allow nurses and other health care professionals to spend more time providing care directly to patients and to create an environment that improves patients’ safety and well-being.

Chief Executive Jo Cubbon, said: ‘At Musgrove we are continuously striving to improve the way we provide care and the construction of the Jubilee building is part of a wider hospital plan to replace outdated accommodation with the very best facilities to help us care for the more patients who are now coming to us with more complex care needs. Our whole ethos around designing and creating the Jubilee building was to provide our patients with hospital accommodation that not only helps them to get better more quickly, but is also a welcoming, relaxing and inviting environment for everyone using it. This is realised through some beautiful artwork provided by our art and design team, Art for Life, and also with the creation of some fantastic outdoor green spaces for our patients, visitors and staff to enjoy – really helping us to put the park back in to Musgrove Park Hospital.’
