Hemel Hempstead, 6 January 2013 – BAM Construction, which has offices in Leeds, expects to start on the Leisure World facility in January after it was approved by planners at East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The facility will include a six-lane, 25 m swimming pool, a smaller learner pool, a freeform pool with water features, two water slides and swimming spectator seating for 150. It will also have a changing village, and a health suite with a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi, showers and foot spa. There will be a 70-station fitness studio, an exercise studio, a spinning studio and spaces for dance and yoga classes. Sports fans will benefit from a six-court sports hall, two squash courts and a feature climbing wall. The building will also include a café with access for both centre users and non-users.
John Phillips, construction director for BAM Construction, said: ‘We’ll bring a local team to this project together with our reputation for quality and our considerate approach. It’s an exciting project – the leisure sector often has unique buildings that need an eye for quality and a collaborative, problem-solving culture like ours. We will also try to deliver economic benefits for the area, involving local firms as much as possible. It’s our second major leisure project in the region, with Huddersfield Sports Centre under construction and three projects in Hull.’
BAM is one of the UK’s biggest contractors, and recently built Leeds Arena. It is the leading construction firm in the Best Companies to Work For list and was listed the highest of all the UK’s companies in the annual carbon reduction table. BAM won Contractor of the Year at the Constructing Excellence awards for Yorkshire and Humber.
