Construction schemes in Plymouth ranked among the best in UK
Hemel Hempstead, 11 February 2013 - Gritting local roads, educating students and closely monitoring environmental impact has seen a major construction company receive national recognition for its performance on three separate Plymouth projects currently under construction. BAM Construct, which also has offices in the city, is building Marine Academy Plymouth, All Saints Academy and University Technical College Plymouth. It received at least 90 per cent of available marks in assessments of all three sites by industry image body the Considerate Constructors Scheme late last year.
The marks put the three sites in the top 10 per cent of those assessed across the UK by the respected independent body. It comes after BAM schemes in Truro, Taunton, Bridgwater and Bristol all scored in the top 10 per cent in the UK in CCS assessments earlier in the year.
Monitor Richard Gilmour praised the UTC Plymouth site team for their ‘dynamic’ attitude. He cited the contractor’s gritting of hazardous local roads during cold spells, and its support for local community events. Gilmour praised the All Saints Academy site’s monitoring of energy use, carbon emissions, waste and recycling. He added: ‘The project manager and site team have developed the site to comply with CCS scheme requirements to a very high level.’
On Marine Academy Plymouth, Gilmour noted that the project manager had provided several site tours for college students, and employed a graduate throughout the scheme.
He said: ‘Communication links with the college and community are very strong.’
BAM Western construction manager Graham Kingdon said: ‘It is very pleasing to receive these high scores from the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which is a body of great importance to the construction industry. These scores reflect the pride we take in our work in Plymouth and across the UK. BAM strives to deliver great buildings and to benefit the local economy, environment and community as it does so.’
Councillor Nicky Williams, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: ‘The Council acts as the buyer in the majority of school building projects for Plymouth and it’s a relationship that works well with BAM, as they are delivering three of the city’s major educational building projects. We ensure that all our contracts are value for money, but more than that we encourage consideration and investment in the surrounding community. As such, BAM aims to provide ten apprenticeships for local young people and will employ around 1800 people on their schemes, with nearly two thirds of these being local. They understand what works well for our communities and make the effort to work closely with school staff, pupils and community groups to ensure their building is a resident-friendly as possible.’
BAM Construct was recently awarded a construction contract on the redevelopment of the Theatre Royal in Plymouth bringing its live projects in the City to four.
