Hemel Hempstead, 16 May 2012 - BAM Construct is to deliver new facilities for a free school aiming to be the biggest in the UK. The contractor’s BAM Construction Western team has been awarded a £6.5 million design and build contract for a major refurbishment and part new build of Bristol Free School.
Works include refurbishing and refitting a 5,000 sq m block for classrooms, science laboratories and technology rooms; as well as building a sports hall with attached dance and drama studio. An all-weather games area will be created and the existing school field drained and re-seeded as a sports pitch.
Subject to planning permission, BAM aims to start on site in July 2012 and complete the project in May 2013.
Bristol Free School was founded by Parents’ Voice and is designed to be a high quality, secular comprehensive state secondary school. The project will increase its capacity to 750 pupils aged 11 to 16 by 2016.
Project manager James Turner said: ‘We are very pleased to have this opportunity to deliver an outstanding school for pupils in Bristol. BAM has worked hard to understand the ambitions of the school and we are confident we will help it achieve these aims.’
