Hemel Hempstead, 28 November 2012 - BAM Construction in the Midlands has been selected as preferred bidder for a £12 million redevelopment of East Midlands Airport. The contractor, which has offices in Derby, will build a new security hall and queuing space for the airport terminal, which will increase the size of the terminal by 1,375 square metres and remodel the retail area in the departure lounge.
BAM has begun enabling works, but the main construction phase takes place between January and December 2013. The contractor will carry out the major works while the airport continues operating as normal. BAM, which is just completing delivery of Derby Council’s new Civic Offices, places great emphasis on trying to secure local labour and materials for its projects.
Contracts Manager Jon Kiteley said: ‘We have several local companies from Nottingham and Derbyshire in prospect, and these are likely to cover steelwork, waste management, and mechanical and electrical aspects of the build. Several of our own team live within the East Midlands.’
Tim McDermott, General Manager, East Midlands Airport said: ‘It is incredibly important to the airport that we work with a team that understands our requirements and also the industry in which we work. BAM Construction has a proven track record and experience when redeveloping an airport and we are looking forward to working closely with the team throughout the build.’
BAM used its experience at Newcastle International Airport – where it built a three-storey terminal extension earlier this year – in its bid for the East Midlands Airport scheme. Mr Kiteley added: ‘It is an important success for us to win this work with East Midlands Airport, because it builds on the success of our Newcastle International Airport scheme. We look forward to delivering a larger terminal to enhance the experience of the 4.3 million passengers that use the airport every year.’
