Hemel Hempstead, 12 May 2011 - Cardiff University has selected BAM Construction to deliver its new Hadyn Ellis Building, the circa £20 million development forming the gateway to its Maindy Park campus.
At around 10,000 square metres, the Hadyn Ellis Building is a science-led facility for post-graduate medical research that will house lecture theatres, clinics, laboratory spaces and office accommodation amongst other facilities. It will feature an impressive atrium, zinc cladding and a concrete cantilevered staircase, and range between three-four and five storeys.
It is the first time that BAM and Cardiff University have worked together. Justin Price, who has been appointed as BAM’s project manager, says: ‘We are very keen indeed to show Cardiff University what we can do and to develop a strong relationship. In very competitive market conditions we’ve secured this prestigious development of a highly sophisticated building which will look really impressive. We’re excited about our new partnership and working with the University and its community.’
BAM resumes a well-established partnership with Nightingale Associates, the architects, with whom it has worked extensively on the Welsh Health Framework. BDP are the structural engineers and AECOM will design the M&E services.
The new building aims to achieve BREEAM ‘excellent’ status.
Professor Tim Wess, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Estates at Cardiff University said: The Hadyn Ellis Building will be a striking landmark development, at the heart of the University’s new Maindy Park research campus. The building will house highly advanced facilities for some of the University’s world-leading interdisciplinary scientific teams, including the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute. We are very pleased to be working with BAM Construction on this highly prestigious project – a project which, we hope, the local community and the city of Cardiff can be proud of.’
BAM’s recent projects in Cardiff include 3 Assembly Square in Cardiff Bay and the David Morgan Apartments and Arcade in the Hayes. The Cardiff University development breaks ground on 19 May and has arranged a ceremony to mark the commencement of works that will be addressed by the Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant.
