Bunnik, The Netherlands, 15 December 2011 – A Kier BAM joint venture has been named preferred bidder by EDF Energy to carry out a £100 milion plus contract for site preparation works for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset.
The work, which is subject to clearance of planning conditions, includes excavation, earthworks, terracing, installation of construction site infrastructure and formation of roads and networks to allow main construction to begin.
The contract is set to create around 350 jobs – many of which would be local appointments – while the main construction works will see up to 25,000 people work on site over the course of the project.
The Hinkley Point C power station will generate about six per cent of the UK’s electricity and all of it will be low carbon - enough to meet the needs of about five million homes.
