German tunnel specialist BAM wins contract for railway tunnel

Bunnik, Netherlands, 2 April 2009 – Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau – the German tunnel specialist of Royal BAM Group nv – has won a contract (in joint venture with Bilfinger + Berger Ingenieurbau, Max Bögl Bauunternehmung and Bickhardt Bau) for the construction of the Silberberg ('Silver Mountain') tunnel with a length of approximately 7.4 kilometres near Großbreitenbach (Thuringian Forest, Central Germany). The tunnel is part of the new high-speed railway line between Ebensfelde and Erfurt. The total contract value amounts to approximately €220 million, of which more than €60 million for Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau.

Construction will start Summer 2009. The joint venture expects to complete the Silberberg tunnel in 2013. The largest part of the tunnel is constructed by blasting rock. In total, more than 1.5 million cubic metres of rock will be removed. The high-speed railway line between Ebensfelde and Erfurt forms part of a new railway link which limits travelling times between München and Berlin (now six hours) to four hours.
