Longmont, CO, September 11, 2006 – Flatiron Construction’s California subsidiary has been awarded two new contracts totaling $131 million. The largest contract is a $91M California Department of Transportation project to improve the I-238/I-580 and I-880 highways in San Leandro and Hayward, CA, about ten miles south of Oakland. The Department also awarded a $40 million contract to widen I-15 in San Diego, CA.
Flatiron will widen and rehabilitate I-238/I-580 and place rubberized asphalt concrete overlay along I-880. Improvements include new lane and shoulder construction along I-238/I-580, as well as bridge widening on I-880. Flatiron will also reconstruct the intersection of I-880 at I-238/I-580, widening connector ramps and placing rubberized concrete overlay. Flatiron will widen a total of five bridges, retrofit and widen three bridges, replace two bridges, construct one new bridge, and perform various other improvements along 4.4 miles of freeway. The contract was awarded on August 17 and is slated for completion in June 2009.
Flatiron also won a $40 million contract to widen 1.5 miles of Interstate 15 by constructing managed lanes within the existing freeway median. This project, known as Unit 5, is part of a larger scheme by the California Department of Transportation to construct managed lanes along approximately twenty miles of the interstate. The managed lanes concept uses moveable barriers to open and close lanes as traffic flow changes. The Unit 5 project also includes movable barrier installation along the entire length of the new I-15 managed lanes from Unit 1 to Unit 5. Flatiron has already been awarded and is in various stages of constructing Units 2, 3, and 4. Unit 5 is slated for completion in September 2008.
