Flatiron secures bascule bridge contract in Florida

Longmont, CO, 2 June 2005 – Flatiron secured a new $77 million contract to replace John’s Pass Bridge in Pinellas County near St. Petersburg, Florida. This is the third contract awarded to Flatiron by the Florida Department of Transportation in less than a month. Flatiron is now participating in over a half billion dollars worth of projects in Florida.

John’s Pass Bridge connects Treasure Island with Madeira Beach on Florida’s western beaches. Although it is not an evacuation route, the bridge does carry approximately 17,000 vehicles per day. John’s Pass Bridge has undergone two major repairs over the past two decades and will now be replaced after 35 years of service.

Flatiron will remove the existing bridge and replace it with a new 875-foot-long bascule bridge. The new bridge’s increased clearance will allow for the passage of additional vessels while lifting the drawbridge less often.

This project is part of a larger scheme to replace a total of five bridges in the immediate area. Construction will begin in November with completion slated for 2009. Elsewhere in Florida, Flatiron is managing the joint venture team constructing the new Tampa Airport Interchanges and is also part of the joint venture constructing the Interstate 10 bridges over Escambia Bay damaged by Hurricane Ivan last September.
