Longmont, Colorado, 25 February 2005 - The California Department of Transportation recently awarded FCI Constructors, a Flatiron Construction subsidiary, a $15.4 million contract to widen and rehabilitate a portion of State Route 99 in Fowler, California.
FCI Constructors Northern Division (FCI North) will rehabilitate freeway pavement and widen Route 99 shoulders and bridges along a 6.1-mile portion of the highway from just south of the Merced Street undercrossing to just north of the Central Avenue overcrossing in Fresno.
FCI North will replace the Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) roadway slab and asphalt concrete overlay, all while maintaining two lanes of traffic in both northbound and southbound directions.
This portion of Route 99 slated for improvements runs north-south from San Joaquin to Kern County, through what is known as the Great Valley. The area is in need of a unified design to tie the communities along the corridor together. According to Caltrans, the master plan not only addresses the corridor's design, but also ‘capacity needs, as increased regional and interregional traffic puts more stress on the corridor.’
FCI will begin the project on 1 April and complete the majority of the rehabilitation by January, 2006.
