Bunnik, Netherlands, 10 June 2004 – Nuttall, the Royal BAM Group civil engineering subsidiary in the UK, has secured an order for building a new 7.7-kilometre bypass (A421 Great Barford Bypass) as well as upgrading another section of road, also 7.7 kilometres long (A428 Caxton Common – Hardwick).
The two projects form part of a single contract awarded by the Highways Agency. The contract value for Nuttall is in excess of €90 million.
The A421, which runs straight through Great Barford (a village southwest of Cambridge) is used by 23,000 vehicles a day. This volume of traffic is a severe nuisance for local inhabitants – especially at rush hours. Site preparation along the route of the new bypass was begun earlier this year. Actual construction will start in the second half of the year. The Great Barford Bypass is due to be opened to traffic by the end of 2006.
The upgrading of the A428 between Caxton Common and Hardwick (just west of Cambridge) is scheduled to start around the beginning of 2005. The work involves widening the road and improvements to the junction near Hardwick. The project is expected to take around 32 months.
