Salt Lake City’s new Medical Center Light Rail Transit, constructed by a joint venture in which the BAM’s US operating company Flatiron is participating, has won three awards for excellence demonstrated on the construction.
As joint venture partner, Flatiron built 1.5 miles of paved double track, four station platforms, overhead contact system, retaining walls, full depth roadway reconstruction, train signals, and numerous utilities.
Not only was the project a success in terms of profit, but also for its contribution to the local community. The joint venture maintained a high level of sensitivity towards the University and Hospital communities by returning use of part of the construction area to the Salt Lake City University during commencement ceremonies, as well as maintaining two open lanes of traffic at all times - twice the capacity required by the owner - to accommodate hospital traffic.
