Flatiron Wins Design-Build Transportation Award

Longmont, CO, 5 May 2004 – Flatiron Constructors, managing joint venture partner of SLC Rail Constructors, won the Design Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) 2004 Design Build in Transportation Award for the construction of Salt Lake City’s University Light Rail Transit Extension.

Flatiron extended the light rail 2.5 miles through a highly urbanized area, connecting downtown Salt Lake City with the University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium, site of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

SLC Rail Constructors went beyond the accelerated schedule, opening the $42 million light rail extension one full year early, in time for the Olympic Ceremonies. According to a testimonial letter from Utah Transit Authority General Manager John Inglish, “…the project’s Community Coordination Team (CCT), representing businesses, residents and stakeholders, gave the contractor a nearly 90% approval rate for not merely meeting, but exceeding construction impact mitigation requirements.”

DBIA presented the award to SLC Rail Constructors during the Design-Build Transportation Conference Awards Ceremony in Baltimore, Maryland on April 22 and 23. The project was chosen from seven transportation finalists for Best Project - Civil over $15 million.
