Ascon to build Sligo Inner Relief Road
Kill, County Kildare, Ireland, 5 April 2004 - The contract for the construction of the Sligo Inner Relief Road was signed on Monday 29 March by County Manager Hubert Kearns and Ascon’s director Bernard Murphy in the presence of the Mayor of Sligo, Ald. Sean MacManus, the Minister for Transport, Seamus Brennan TD, and Minister of State, Jim McDaid TD.
The project comprises the construction of a 4.65 km length of dual carriageway road in both a rural and urban environment. The first 3.6 km of the road extends from the existing Sligo Collooney Dual Carriageway to Summerhill. This section is through a rural environment and includes 2 grade-separated junctions. There are three bridge structures on this section. The final 1.05 km of the route is through an urban environment, linking into four existing road junctions and finally the Michael Hughes Bridge.
Associated site works include activities such as; earthworks, drainage, bridges, retaining walls, soft ground treatment, service diversions, footways & cycle-ways, safety barriers, signage, traffic signals, and landscaping. The urban environment involves extensive retaining wall construction of varying types, close to existing occupied properties. Traffic management during the works will also be a key issue as well as liaison with 3rd parties affected by the works.
Ascon is delighted to be involved in this prestigious project which will commence with immediate effect. This dual carriageway and associated infrastructure will be of great benefit for the NW Region. Minister Brennan advised that the Sligo Inner Relief Road was able to proceed now on the basis of the increased funding for the BMW region.
