Nuttall secures £26 million coastal protection scheme
Edmund Nuttall Ltd has secured a contract valued at nearly £26 million to undertake coastal protection work for Scarborough Borough Council.
The scheme, which was designed by Highpoint Rendel, is expected to take 22 months to complete and involves extensive improvements to a 2.1km stretch of coastline around Scarborough’s famous Headland below the castle. The funding for this project has been provided jointly by DEFRA and Scarborough Council.
The scope of the works include the following key elements; the construction of a rock and precast Accropode armoured revetment against the existing sea wall and the grade II listed East Pier, repairs to the existing sea wall and the construction of a new parapet/wave wall and promenade.
It is anticipated that 280,000 tonnes of rock armour will be used during construction, which will be imported from Norway.
The 4,000 precast Accropodes will be manufactured in Sunderland and transported by sea to the site by barge. The Accropodes weigh between 15-22 tonnes each.
Around 600 precast piles will also be drilled and installed at the toe of the revetment.
