Bunnik, Netherlands, 15 November 2004 – Edmund Nuttall Ltd – the UK civil engineering company of Royal BAM Group nv – has been awarded the contract to construct the Barnstaple Western Bypass for Devon County Council.
The gross scheme costs amount to € 61 million. Work on site is likely to commence in January 2005, with the bypass opening for traffic in the winter of 2006/7. The total contract period will be 130 weeks.
The design and build scheme involves linking the A361 Braunston Road with the A39 Atlantic Highway via a 2.7km single two lane carriageway west of Barnstaple. The contract also includes a 409m-long, five span bridge over the River Taw, along with a 100m-long, three span viaduct for buses, cyclists and pedestrians to the railway station.
