BAM wins tunnel contracts in Luxembourg and Munich

Bunnik, 29 October 2004 – Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau and Galère – both operating companies of Royal BAM Group nv – have in joint-venture been awarded a contract for the construction of a road tunnel in Luxembourg. At the same time, Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau has been awarded a joint-venture contract for the construction of an underground tunnel in Munich. The total contract value amounts to €222 million, of which €120 million is for the Group.

The Grouft-tunnel in Luxembourg is part of the Route du Nord (A7) between Luxembourg City and Mersch. The project, commissioned by the ministry of Public Works, is for the construction of a tunnel, three kilometre in length, between the Plateau Heeschdrëfferbierg and the Alzettedal near Lorentzweiler. The joint venture will undertake the construction of two tubes with a gradient of five per cent, one tube having three lanes and the other two. Between both tubes - which are to be excavated using traditional methods and partly by use of explosives - ten cross connections will be constructed.

The contract value amounts to €149 million, of which €90 million is for Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau and Galère. The tunnel will be completed at the end of 2009, after a construction period of more than four years.

In Munich the German tunnel specialist of Royal BAM Group is involved in the construction of a tunnel for the extension of the U-Bahn. It involves the construction of two single-track tunnels each with a length of 1,200 meters. For this, a tunnel boring machine, equipped with a hydroschild – developed by Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau – will be used. This project also includes the construction of stations at Moosach and Leipziger Strasse. The contract value amounts to more than €73 million, of which €30 million is for Wayss & Freytag and the project will be completed in July 2009.
