A timber mitre lock gate is lifted into position as part of a 724,000 euro repair contract being carried out at Canning Graving docks in Liverpool, United Kingdom, by John Martin, a subsidiary of Nuttall, the UK civil engineering company of Royal BAM Group.
The lock gates are 7.3 metre high and 6.4 metre wide and weigh 18 tons each and are made of exxi hardwood. The existing timber mitre gates were in a poor condition and required replacement. To maintain a dry dock during removal of the old and installation of the new gates John Martin Construction designed and installed a temporary sheet piled cofferdam at the dock entrance for client National Museums Liverpool.
