John Martin Construction, part of Nuttall, is undertaking the renovation of the dry dock containing the S.S. Great Britain in Bristol. The old wooden seals on the dock gates, which had almost rotted away, have been replaced.
The work is part of an ambitious plan to protect the ship from corrosion. A transparent plastic screen is to be placed between the hull of the ship and the dock walls, creating an enclosed space surrounding the lower half of the hull, in which dehumidifiers will be installed. The S.S. Great Britain, designed by the famous engineer Brunel, was launched in 1843 and was the first ocean-going iron ship to have a propeller. www.ss-great-britain.com
