HBG Utiliteitsbouw and Ballast Nedam Bouw have started work at Schiphol Airport on the extension of the South Lounge – departures and arrivals concourse – as well as the construction of a baggage basement. This is the first part of a major order worth around €40 million.
The work involves extending the existing passenger facilities on the platform side on three floors, giving a total area of 29,000 m2. The baggage basement comprises an enormous concrete box 150 metres long, 70 metres wide and 5 metres deep. This basement will be fitted out with an ingenious baggage handling system. Construction work is expected to start this month. Tendering and award of contracts for the rest of the work, in the form of separate subprojects, will take place before the end of the year.
