Rotterdam, the Netherlands – The Malaysian Ministry of Transport has awarded Ballast Ham Dredging and its Malaysian joint venture partner Integrated Marine Works (IMW) the contract for the execution of the dredging works for the second phase of the container terminal in the port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia.
The port of Tanjung Pelepas is situated in the south of the Malaysian peninsula, on the Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. The container terminal will offer space to eight container carriers. The total dredging contract value amounts to EUR 265 million. The execution of the project starts immediately and is scheduled for completion in July 2004.
The project involves reclamation of 33 million cubic metres of sand fill to extend the existing container terminal and deepening of the access channel to -16 metres by removing 39 million cubic metres of soft mud. Subsoil consolidation of the new container area will be realised through the installation of vertical drains and deep compaction. A 4 kilometres long shore protection will safeguard the terrain.
In the late nineties Ballast Ham Dredging was also involved in the execution of phase 1 of the construction of this container terminal.
The joint venture will deploy a variety of dredging equipment including five large trailing suction hopper dredgers and a cutter suction dredger.
