Light rail expansion in Dortmund

Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau has secured a contract for the expansion of Dortmund’s ‘Stadtbahn’ light rail system. The contract value is more than €26 million. The project involves the construction of a tunnel 1,400 metres long, the Ostentor [‘Eastgate’] Station and a platform 220 metres long. The entire project will be completed by the end of 2005.

Dortmund has more than fifty kilometres of tram lines and metro lines, of which sixteen kilometres run underground. The Stadtbahn expansion project being built by Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau is part of the east-west route and lies in the east of Dortmund. The underground Ostentor Station will have three entrances, with steps and escalators. There is also a lift serving the central platform. The design of the entrances is supposed to invoke the medieval city gates of Dortmund in the days of the Hanseatic League.
