Delta Marine Consultants, the hydraulic engineering design office of HBG Civiel, took just three weeks to produce a draft design for a dam at the planned new harbour Yangshan Port, near Shanghai.
The rush job was carried out by the Chinese government’s Third Harbour Engineering Investigation and Design Institute. The institute contacted the Dutch embassy in Beijing to call in the help of Dutch hydraulic engineering experts. DMC proposed alternative construction methods for the 2.5 kilometre long dam, including the use of concrete blocks which are positioned using a funicular railway.
