The Castor, by far the heaviest cutter suction dredger in the BHD fleet, shudders as it gets to work off the coast of Mesaieed Port. Despite those hard layers, Ballast Ham Dredging is making good progress with dredging seven million cubic metres of material and discharging it in land reclamation areas.
The work is part of a new terminal for stone chippings. Italian joint venture partner Grandi Lavori Fincosit is responsible for the construction of the wharf and associated facilities, its stone foundation and the related infrastructure. BHD is responsible for dredging a 500-metre trench, the bottom of which is 15 metres below the surface, in which the wharf will be built, deepening the harbour basin to a depth of 13 metres and creating two areas of reclaimed land and an interconnecting dam with the dredged material. The contract value for the BHD share of the work is around €30 million.
