The first modules for the Netherlands’ very first modular substation were installed this week. This circular and sustainable substation is located alongside the railway in The Hague North.
A substation is a type of electricity building situated along the railway. It converts power from the grid operator into electricity for the overhead lines that run the trains. The new substations are built using prefabricated modules, which are constructed and tested off-site. This method offers many advantages: installation is faster and the surrounding area experiences less disruption due to the shorter construction time. Rail services are also interrupted for a shorter period. By using circular and/or biobased materials to construct the buildings, they can be deployed sustainably. The modules are designed for long-term use. Thanks to standardisation, lengthy permit procedures are avoided, and a variety of façades can be installed depending on the preferences of the local authority.
