Bristol, 19 January 2016 - A Bristol construction company is celebrating 50 years of continuous operations in Bristol. BAM Construction opened an office in Queen Square in 1966 (it was originally known as Higgs and Hill) and celebrated its 25th anniversary in a marquee erected on the historic square. In 1996, it moved to its current location in Fox Den Road, Stoke Gifford.
Over 50 years, the company has worked on projects including the Rolls Royce offices in Patchway, the Custom House at Avonmouth, the former Port of Bristol offices in Queen Square and M Shed. Recently BAM built Imperial Tobacco’s Global and UK headquarters buildings at Ashton, Christ Church Primary School in Clifton and, currently, Dolphin Primary School.
One reason for its success has been its carefully nurtured and locally based supply chain. In the past five years alone, more than 300 companies within a 15 mile radius of Bristol City Centre have been employed on BAM schemes generating orders in excess of £160 million for the city’s businesses.
Nick Goff, Regional Director for BAM, said: ‘’ Our formula has always been to grow sustainably. By seeking out and using local companies, both subcontractors and suppliers, we are passing back the benefits of our economic impact to the communities where we are working. Our community involvement goes even further, for example we have used every school project we have undertaken as a learning tool giving the students an insight into our industry and linking what we do on site to the curriculum in subjects such as maths, science and design technology. In the past three years we have given £300,000 in donations and volunteering time to local charities and community groups.’
So successful was BAM’s Bristol office that it soon opened offices in Cardiff and Exeter too, which are now longstanding businesses and serve the whole of South Wales and the West Country.
