In Carlow town, approximately ninety kilometers south-west of Dublin, Rohcon, the building division of Ascon Contractors, has commenced the construction of a visual arts centre or to use its formal name, The National Centre for Contemporary Art and the George Bernard Shaw Theatre. The building, designed by Terry Pawson Architects, is located close to the town centre on the grounds of a large nineteenth century seminary, which is overlooked by Carlow's cathedral.
This €14 million project consists of the construction of a new 350 seat performing arts theatre, four gallery spaces together with associated administration, performance and circulation space. The scope includes the full theatre fit out including specialist sound and lighting packages and also full bar, café and kitchen fit outs. Rohcon will complete the project in December 2008. The entire external envelop of the building will consist of an opaque glazed facade.
